The vanilla plant may be one of the most important orchids on the planet. The familiar spice derived from its bean pods is the second most expensive spice in the world (after saffron), and boasts a longstanding history as a highly demanded commodity. Vanilla beans were first cultivated centuries ago by the Totonac people of eastern coastal Mexico, in what is now Veracruz. This lovely orchard was a staple of their culture, impacting everything from cooking to mythology. Since the arrival of Europeans, the popularity of vanilla exploded throughout the world, and today can be found gracing cuisines, bath & body products, perfumes, soaps, candles and more!
